Segmented polymer run flat inserts. Built for the mission.
Three bolt-together polymer segments replace the traditional solid rubber donut. Lighter. Faster to install. Field-serviceable. And no hydraulic press required.
What a run flat insert does when the air is gone.
Under normal operation, the run flat insert sits inside the tire cavity — between the rim and the inner tread surface. It doesn't touch the tire. The vehicle rides on air pressure like any other wheel.
When a tire loses pressure — from a ballistic strike, IED fragment, rock puncture, or terrain damage — the tire collapses. The vehicle's weight transfers from the air column to the run flat insert. The insert:
- Supports the vehicle's weight up to 5,000+ kg per corner on armored platforms
- Locks the tire bead to the rim prevents the tire from peeling off during maneuvers
- Provides a running surface the tire tread rides on the insert, not the rim
- Enables continued driving up to 100 km at reduced speed to reach safety
Static vs. Dynamic Run Flat Inserts
Static RunFlat System — Three antiballistic polymer segments bolted together. The workhorse. Hand-tool installation, field-swappable segments, no press required. Ideal for most tactical wheel applications.
Not all run flat inserts are built the same.
The material and design of a run flat insert determines everything: how it's installed, how much it weighs, whether it can be serviced in the field, and how far you can drive on it.
| Feature | Segmented Polymer | Solid Rubber | Steel/Composite Ring |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation Method | ✓ Hand tools — bolt-together segments | Hydraulic press required | Press or specialized rig |
| Weight per Wheel | ✓ ~15% lighter than rubber | Heaviest — 90–200 lbs per insert | Moderate — varies by design |
| Field Serviceability | ✓ Individual segments swappable | Must ship to equipped facility | Limited — often single-piece |
| Ballistic Resistance | ✓ Antiballistic polymer — armored vehicle rated | Moderate — degrades with heat | High — but heavy |
| Mobility Range | ✓ Up to 100 km | 30–50 km typical | 50–80 km typical |
| Reusability | ✓ Inspect and re-use | Often single-use | Reusable with inspection |
| Lubricant Required | ✓ Yes — NSN 2640-01-419-6200 (NSN 2640014196200) | Yes | Varies |

Hand tools. No press. Any motor pool.
Segmented polymer run flat inserts install differently than traditional solid rubber inserts. Three segments feed through the tire bead, bolt together around the rim, and torque to spec. The entire procedure uses standard hand tools — no hydraulic press, no fitting machine, no special rig.
